Things You May Need for 3D Printing

3D Boaty

Every time a friend gets into 3D printing, I end up sending over a bunch of helpful links. Over time, I've rounded up a list of tools that have really helped keep my projects running smoothly.

Tools

  1. Balldriver Screwdrivers
These screwdrivers handle the tiny screws on most 3D printers without a fuss. Their balanced design and different sizes mean you’ll always have the right tool handy for putting things together, doing routine maintenance, or making a quick repair.
  2. Deburring Tool
3D printed parts often come with rough edges or little burrs—especially if you're doing a bit of post-processing. A deburring tool is super useful for smoothing these out, so your parts look neat and fit together just right.
  3. Micro Cutter
Sometimes you need to trim off extra filament or fix a small imperfection. This micro cutter is great for that kind of detailed work, and its ergonomic design keeps things comfortable even during longer sessions.
  4. Digital Caliper Measuring Tool
When you’re tweaking your printer or checking that your printed parts match your design, a digital caliper is essential. It measures down to tiny increments, making sure everything lines up perfectly.
  5. Loctite Super Glue UltraGel Control
When you need a little extra help keeping parts together, this gel formula is your go-to. It offers controlled application (so no messy drips), bonds quickly, and works on plastics and resins—just what you need for those precision fixes.
  6. X-ACTO Knife
Perfect for cleaning up support material or trimming away extra filament, a sharp X-ACTO knife makes detailed work a breeze.
  7. Heat Gun
A heat gun is handy not just for smoothing out surfaces, but also for removing supports or even giving a failed print a second chance by reflowing the plastic.
  8. Handheld Vacuum
A trusty handheld vacuum is great for quickly cleaning up dust and debris from your workspace. Whether you're sanding prints or just tidying up after a busy session, it helps keep your area neat without any hassle.
  9. Magnets!
Magnets aren’t just for sticking notes on your fridge—they’re great for organizing small metal parts, too. Plus, you can design your prints to include a spot for a magnet, letting you create modular, detachable components or just keep things together without glue.
  10. Rubber Feet
Whether you're printing phone stands or Raspberry Pi cases these come in handy so you're printing doesn't move around.
  11. Super Lube
Over time your lead screws will need to be lubed and this is the recommended lube to use.

These tools have saved me a ton of time, whether I’m setting up a new printer or fine-tuning a design. If you’re diving into the world of 3D printing, having these reliable tools in your kit can really make things easier.

Filament

  1. Bambu Lab
Bambu Lab filament is known for its consistent quality, making it a solid choice for everyday prints. One neat bonus is the built-in RFID tech, which is especially useful with the AMS (Automatic Material System). It helps make sure you’re loading the right spool, reducing mix-ups and streamlining your workflow.
  2. Atomic Filaments
If PETG is your go-to, Atomic Filaments is worth a look. Their PETG is praised for its durability and clarity, offering great layer adhesion and minimal warping—ideal for both functional and decorative prints.
  3. Prusament
For top-notch performance, Prusament is hard to beat. Out of all the filament brands I've tried, it consistently delivers with excellent color and diameter consistency, making it perfect for high-precision projects.
  4. Protopasta
Protopasta might be on the pricier side, but it’s a solid investment if you’re after unique colors and reliable performance. Their filaments provide vibrant hues (High Five Blue is a personal favorite) and maintain quality throughout your print.
  5. Inland PLA+
For a budget-friendly option, Inland PLA+ hits the spot. Available through retailers like Amazon and Micro Center, it offers a great balance between cost and performance. While it may not have the high-end precision of some premium brands, it gets the job done reliably for everyday printing.

Filament Storage

  1. Sterilite Airtight Storage Bins
If you’re looking for a dry place to store your filament, check Target for these bins. Ensure you get the airtight ones.
  2. Eva-Dry Wireless Mini Dehumidifier
These dehumidifiers are fantastic because you can simply plug them in and recharge them. Simply drop one of these into one of the bins to keep them dry.

Happy printing!
